T-Levels explained

What ARE T-Levels? Launched in September 2020 nationally, they follow on from GCSEs and are the equivalent to 3 A Levels.

The Bedford College Group is running them from September 2021 (having previously helped to pilot the work experience aspect of the scheme with some local employers*).

T-Levels offer student a mixture of classroom and “on the job” experience during a placement of 315 hours/45 days.

There is a financial bonus of up to £750 per learner per employer. The Bedford College Group has a target for 673 learners, of which up 50% can attract  funding. As such £252k would be available to support local employers.

Here’s how one company benefited from supporting the work experience part of the scheme:

Tillet & Hague at Wrest park in Silsoe, Beds gave an opportunity to three electrical/electronics engineering students.

*They all were part of the T-Level pilot programme working towards 315 work experience hours in 2019-20.

They attended work weekly, including during the college breaks.

Even in lockdown the company managed to give two of the students work to do from home.

The outcome led to Bartlomiej Wojcieszynski being offered a Higher Apprenticeship with them. His study at Bedford college is a HNC engineering course.

“The T-Level program has been a great opportunity for us to get to know the young people and for them to learn how we work at first hand.  This relationship has been very helpful in planning for future Higher Apprenticeship roles,” said Nick Tillett.
