Tresham College, part of The Bedford College Group, has been inspiring students to think green with its Green Skills, Sustainability & Environmental Awareness Week.
This took place across its Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough campuses.
The student-focused initiative brought together curriculum-led activities, employer engagement and interactive awareness stalls to highlight the importance of sustainability, environmental responsibility and the growing demand for green skills across industries.
Throughout the week, students from a wide range of subject areas took part in themed activities designed to embed sustainability into everyday learning. Professional Development sessions across campuses were centred on the theme “Going Green & The Environment”, while English and maths lessons incorporated environmental topics such as the disposal of hazardous materials and the effect it can have on the local environment.
Understanding sustainable practices and conservation
Students also benefited from direct engagement with high-profile organisations and environmental groups. iForce, part of the Culina Group (home to brands including Fortnum & Mason) hosted awareness stalls on campus alongside Bedfordshire Wildlife Trust, helping students understand sustainable practices and the vital role of conservation.
Rachael Whiting, Account Executive at iForce, part of the Culina Group, said:
“It’s been fantastic to speak to students about what we do at iForce, which many of the students are aware of already, as it is located just down the road. Both students and staff have been curious about us as a company, but not only that, we have been able to share information about joining the iForce workforce. Sustainability week at Tresham is also a fantastic way to showcase our environmental practices across our processes, products, and projects.”
At Corby Campus, Marsh Industries delivered a live demonstration focused on water management and rainwater recycling, giving students an insight into practical green technologies and the career opportunities within the sustainability sector.
Dan Burns, Vice Principal of Tresham College, added:
“Developing our students’ wider knowledge and skill set is a key focus for Tresham College and The Bedford College Group. Hosting awareness events such as our Environment, Sustainability and Green Skills Week provides the opportunity for our learners to showcase their learning and to connect with employers and stakeholders and to support in linking their learning to their community and beyond. Sustainability awareness and green skills are core skills for employment and career success and we are committed to developing these skills for our students to support them to flourish and create a sustainable future.”
Sharing ideas and raising awareness
Across the campuses, students lead their own displays and stands throughout the week, sharing ideas and raising awareness among their peers. Health & Social Care students explored environmental links to wellbeing, Children & Education students focused on the importance of environmental awareness from an early age, and Science students showcased practical work, including water testing activities. Green energy display rigs were also on show to help students better understand renewable energy and the move towards a low-carbon future.
Recognising opportunities
Green Skills, Sustainability & Environmental Awareness Week reflected The Bedford College Group’s wider commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for emerging industries and sustainable careers. By embedding environmental themes across curriculum areas and welcoming employers and community organisations onto campus, Tresham College continues to work hard to ensure students not only understand the importance of sustainability but also recognise the opportunities it presents for their future.
