Young people from Northampton have worked together to build a pergola at the Northamptonshire Country Centre in Berrywood Drive as part of The Prince’s Trust Team programme delivered by Tresham College.
The Centre supports adults with learning disabilities and helping young people gain valuable work experience.
As part of a 12-week personal development programme for young people aged 16-25 years, the North Northampton Prince’s Trust Team programme offers an opportunity for young people who are unemployed to improve their self-confidence and gain valuable work experience.
Hayley Moran, Day Services Manager at the centre was very impressed by the team:
The young people been a pleasure to work with and it is has been a privilege to have watched them grown in confidence over their time here. The pergola looks amazing.
The Northamptonshire Country Centre provides workplace activities for adults with learning disabilities. The site includes greenhouses and polytunnels for growing vegetables and a farm shop. The new pergola at the front of the centre has been built on waste ground that can now be used to display their farm produce.
The work carried out by the Prince’s Trust team was supported by donations from the Rotary Club of Northampton Becket and Kislingbury Church Over 50’s group. Local company Ricoh UK Ltd has also supported the programme with work placements.
Tresham College and Prince’s Trust Senior Team Leader Paul Hamblin headed the team:
These young people complete a 12-week programme which always includes a community project such as this. The team have to plan, prepare and complete the project themselves and they learn a lot of skills in the process.
Sam Robb, 22, was in foster care for much of his life: “I had no idea what to do with my life but now as a father myself I wanted to get back into employment. Paul and the programme have helped guide me towards a career and I’m hoping to get a job as a support worker with the experience I have gained.”
