Bringing the Fire Service to life

Top flight work experience PR Story

On Monday 5 January 10 Level 2 Uniformed Public Services (UPS) students had the opportunity to visit a local fire station in Kettering.

Michelle Bates, Youth and Diversion Officer for the Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, took the students through a safety briefing followed by a very interesting presentation which included; information about the ranks within the Fire Service, the equipment that the teams use for different emergencies and the types of incidents the crews have to attend – everything from fires and Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs), to supporting the ambulance service in attending to bariatric patients, animal rescue and body recovery.

For the second part of their visit the students had the chance to go through a simulation of a rescue under the types of conditions firefighters may face. Firstly, the students had to navigate a room as a group working their way around any hazards. The second obstacle was a corridor full of tangled plastic wire and finally a series of joined cages and tunnels which the students had to find their way through. All of the tasks were in the pitch black – a great way for students to understand what it’s like to work without one of their senses whilst working together as a team and to understand more about the Fire Service and the challenges they face in their everyday roles.

Tony Delve, UPS Lecturer at Tresham College, said: “These visits are an excellent opportunity for our students to get hands on experience with some of the training carried out by Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service.  As well as being an interesting and challenging session, it is particularly useful for aspects of their assignment work as they can apply this to their Responding to Emergency Incidents and their Leadership and teamwork modules.

Enrichment activities with the emergency services and armed forces form a valuable element to our students’ overall experience and we are fortunate to have a balance of activities that enhance their understanding of the demands of Public Services life”
