There’s still time to secure your next step this September, that’s the message from The Bedford College Group to school leavers across Bedfordshire following GCSE results.

The Group is continuing to accept applications for a wide range of courses, giving young people who are still deciding what to do next the opportunity to explore their options and find a route that suits their interests, ambitions and future career plans.

With campuses across Bedfordshire, including Bedford College, The Bedford Sixth Form, Shuttleworth College near Biggleswade and Central Bedfordshire College in Dunstable, Luton and Leighton Buzzard, students can access a broad range of post-16 study and training opportunities close to home.

Variety of courses

Places remain available across a variety of vocational and technical courses, covering subjects including Hair and Beauty, Motor Vehicle, Construction, Engineering and Computing & IT. These practical programmes give students the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and hands-on skills while working towards recognised qualifications.

School leavers can also explore T Levels, two-year technical qualifications designed with employers. Equivalent to three A levels, T Levels combine classroom-based learning with substantial industry experience, giving students the chance to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to progress into university, a higher apprenticeship or skilled employment.

For those ready to enter the workplace, apprenticeships offer another route after GCSEs, enabling young people to earn a salary, gain hands-on experience with an employer and work towards a recognised qualification at the same time.

Young people are required to remain in education or training until the age of 18. This can include full-time education, an apprenticeship, or working or volunteering for 20 hours or more a week alongside part-time education or training.

Students who have not yet achieved the required grades in GCSE English and maths can continue studying these subjects alongside their main programme, helping them build the skills and qualifications they need for future study and employment.

“GCSE results are an important milestone, but you don’t need to have your whole future mapped out straight away. If you’re still unsure which route or subject is right for you, our team can talk through your interests, strengths and ambitions and help you understand the options available.

“Whether that’s a vocational or technical course, a T Level or an apprenticeship, there are different ways to build the skills and experience you need for your future. Our focus is on preparing every learner for their next step, whether that’s university, an apprenticeship or employment, and there is still time to find the right option and get started this September.”
