Bedford College, part of The Bedford College Group, has secured a £15,000 national grant from the NOCN Group Foundation.

This marks an exciting step forward in its plans to transform green skills training using Virtual Reality (VR).

The project will use VR technology to deliver hands-on training in renewable energy and sustainable construction. Students will be able to practice real-world skills such as installing solar panels, fitting heat pumps and using eco-friendly building methods.

In addition to the grant, The Bedford College Group is contributing a further £25,000 to the project taking the total project funding to £40,000.

It is designed to support a wide range of students, including 16–18-year-olds, NEET young people (aged 16–24 not in education, employment or training), and adults looking to retrain. The immersive approach helps remove barriers to learning by offering a safe, engaging and flexible environment.

Supporting routes into employment

Using VR, students can build practical skills without the cost, risk or environmental impact of traditional training. The programme will also link directly to existing courses and qualifications, ensuring it meets industry standards and supports clear routes into employment.

The project comes at a time of rapid growth in the UK’s green economy. Green jobs have risen to over 690,000 in recent years, with demand continuing to increase. Local Skills Improvement Plans also highlight a pressing need for construction and clean growth skills in the South Midlands.

To make sure the training is relevant and effective, Bedford College will work closely with local employers to shape the course content. Technology partners will support the development of high-quality VR experiences.

By combining innovation with strong employer links, The Bedford College Group is helping prepare students for the jobs of the future and supporting the UK’s move towards a low-carbon economy.

Dave Roffey, Director of Projects and Sustainability at The Bedford College Group, said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to receive this funding, which allows us to explore new and innovative ways of delivering green skills training. What’s particularly exciting about this project is its potential to engage students who may not thrive in traditional training environments. By using immersive technology, we can open up more flexible, inclusive and responsive ways of learning.

“Working closely with employers also means we’re not just innovating for the sake of it; we’re developing training that reflects real-world expectations and helps build a workforce that’s ready to meet the challenges of a more sustainable future.”

The funding comes from the NOCN Group Foundation, a charity set up by education and skills organisation NOCN Group to support innovation across the UK skills sector. Its Skills Innovation Grant Programme backs projects that help people into work, develop green skills and use new technology to improve learning and assessment.
