The Bedford College Group is one of 188 across the UK to receive a share of £200 Million funding announced by Department of Education.
“We want to build a world class Further Education system which delivers for the whole nation, and a key part is ensuring colleges are fit for the future – with better facilities,” said Gavin Williamson Education Secretary.
Earlier in the year Prime Minister Boris Johnson said of the investment it was important to: “ …lay the foundations for a country where everyone has a chance to succeed, with our younger generations front and centre of this mission.”
Ian Pryce CBE, Principal and CEO of The Bedford College Group said:
“We applaud the government’s decision to invest £1.2 billion to improve further education college buildings, and to release £200 million of that straightaway.
“As one of the largest college groups in the country, The Bedford College Group will receive £2 million initially which will really help us upgrade some of our oldest buildings at our Bedford campus.
“This comes on top of the additional £2.9 million we will receive thanks to support from SEMLEP to allow us to develop a new offsite-construction centre at Bedford.
“It feels like government is acknowledging the importance of colleges in helping the country recover economically from the Covid-19 pandemic, and the need to invest in technical skills.”
The £5 Million “building” bonuses will be available for projects starting in 2020.
