125 Years of Achievement

Bedford College Achievements Ceremony 2017

The annual Achievement Ceremony of Bedford College in 2017 celebrated the highlights of the most successful year in the 125 year history of the organisation.

Bedford College can trace its roots back to the foundation of a PE teacher training college* in the 1800s, through post-War changes in the 1950s and to its current status as one of the top FE colleges in the UK.

Bedford College Achievements Ceremony 2017

2016/2017 saw Bedford College:

  • merge with Tresham College in Northamptonshire to become The Bedford College Group
  • sign a 40 year lease on the countryside setting of Shuttleworth College
  • open two brand new schools at the Wixams village development
  • start work on a multi-million advanced engineering centre to serve the SEMLEP region

In addition the college staff and students won a catalogue of national, regional and local awards which are detail under News on the www.bedford.ac.uk

Back at the day job, The Bedford College Group achieved record results across a range of educational and training areas. This included helping 1,000 young people who had failed their GCSEs maths or English at school to pass those vital qualifications after only 34 weeks at college.

Principal and CEO Ian Pryce CBE told the audience at the Bedford Corn Exchange on Tuesday November 28th: “Our success is built upon the energy and commitment of our community – employers, our staff, our governors, our students and their parents and families. I should like to thank them all.”

New Chair of Governors Roger Marriott added his thanks to all those who had contributed to the success of the college.

Three students were short-listed as the Outstanding Student of the Year with Rajbir Dhot of The Bedford Sixth Form taking the prize. Runners-up were Niamh Duncan who finished at Shuttleworth College with a Triple Distinction and is now studying to be a PE teacher and Heather Young who is now in the RAF having completed a Public Services Course at Bedford College.

The link back to the earliest days of PE teaching and sport was well made by having medal-winning Boccia paralympian David Smith as the guest speaker. David’s coach is Tresham College staff member Sarah Nolan and so it was a great link to demonstrate the added value to Bedford of the merger with Northamptonshire.
