Phoenix Starr college provides industry practitioners and experienced lecturers delivering all aspects of dance. On a challenging physical programme, students enter competitions and benefit from opportunities to work in industry throughout the year. Students are supported through regular one-to-ones with their dance tutors and a 25 hour-per-week programme covering; Hip Hop, Commercial, Jazz, Ballet, Tap and Contemporary.

Students will work alongside industry professionals from the West End and Commercial Dance world to develop skills, both as a performer and as a professional.

Students will study at The Phoenix Starr Studios based in Luton along with other members of the Phoenix Starr College team.

Entry requirements

To begin this study programme you will need…

Duration: 2 Years 

  • 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C or 9-4 ideally including English and maths

OR

  • Performing Arts BTEC Level 2 Diploma with Functional Skills/GCSE English and maths grades A*-C or 9-4

AND

  • Entry will also be subject to participation in an audition where you will be required to perform a two minute dance routine in a style of your choice.
Course content

During the study programme you will study a range of dance techniques, focussing on Commercial and Hip Hop Dance.
You will also study academic units that will develop your analytical skills, as well as your understanding of the performing arts industries including self-promotion, CV writing other skills needed as a freelancer, all enabling you to become an employable dance professional.

All of our technique classes are banded, meaning that you will be working with dancers at your level and ensuring that you are being challenged.

This study programme will equip you with dance skills across a range of disciplines including Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz, focussing on Commercial and Hip Hop Dance. Developed in association with one of the UK’s first Hip Hop Dance colleges, this course focusses on creating employable, diverse dancers. As well as Dance Performance, you will also develop choreographic skills, enabling you to explore a wider aspect of the dance world.

You will receive a minimum of 25 contact hours a week across your course.

Additional information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition fees, exam fees and College membership are free. However, there are additional costs associated with some courses. For example, you may be required to purchase specialist uniforms, equipment or books.

To take part in this course there will be an additional fee of approximately £100 for trips, visits and competition entries.  All students are expected to wear the Academy uniform, available to purchase from www.phoenixstarrcollege.com.  This will cover all classes including as a minimum; PSAD T-shirt, ballet leotard and jazz leotard at approximately £80.  Students can provide their own ballet shoes and tights or purchase them from PSAD.
