Production Arts (Make-up) Advanced (Level 3)This course will provide you with the opportunity to explore, develop and test your creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating, demanding and supportive. It will offer you an excellent opportunity to develop all-round and transferable skills in all aspect of the make-up industry.
You will explore SFX, Prosthetics, Stage Make-Up and Hair, Period Make-Up and Hair, Body Art, Fashion and Fantasy. Alongside these specialisms you will also work on both small and large scale productions throughout the year, such as musicals and plays to design and realise the make-up and hair designs.
This will support your experience and expertise when planning and executing your Final Major Project, where you take on ownership and responsibility of managing the success of a collaborative performance.

Need to know
Entry requirements
Essential: 4 GCSEs Grade 4 or above (including English), Successful interview where you will be expected to produce a moodboard and portfolio images.
Desirable: GCSE maths Grade 4 or above.
What qualification will I gain?
UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma Performing and Production Arts.
How will I be assessed?
Internally assessed and externally moderated practical assessments and portfolio of supporting academic evidence.
Course content
What will I study?
You will work alongside industry professionals exploring the various aspects of the production arts industry. You will learn how to: create a character design; use sfx make-up; create period hairstyles and work within the different areas of the industry and build a portfolio.

- Unit 1 – Principles of performance
- Unit 2 – Engaging with an audience
- Unit 3 – Introduction to professional practice
- Unit 4 – Critical and contextual awareness
- Unit 5 – Production skills and context
- Unit 6 – Performance skills and context
- Unit 7 – Preparation for specialist study
- Unit 8 – Collaborative performance project
Year 2:
- Unit 9: Developing performance and Production Skills
- Unit 10: Preparing for Progression
- Unit 11: Exploration of Specialist Study and Context
- Unit 12: Extended Project
Next steps
Course progression:
This course will allow you to progress onto degree level study or it will allow you to progress onto specialist short courses.
Career progression:
Careers can range from a make-up assistant to head of make-up, depending of the area of specialism.
Additional information
You will be required to purchase a kit and uniform in order to undertake this course (approx. £350).
There will be approximately 2 educational trips per year approx. £50 per trip.
