Practical Horticulture & Gardening

This course is suitable for anyone wanting to develop Practical skills in Horticulture and Gardening, if you have a keen interest in Horticulture and want to improve your Gardening knowledge and Practical skills, to improve your home Garden, allotment or progress onto a Royal Horticultural Society course following completion.

If you have a passion for gardening or looking to improve your home garden or if you are thinking about setting up an allotment this course will support your understanding for growing, maintaining plants and correct tool use.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for this course however it is desirable to have an experience of gardening.

What qualification will I gain?

A college Certificate in Practical Horticulture and Gardening

How will I be assessed? 

There are no formal assessments for this introductory course.

Course content

During the introductory course you will undertake practical Gardening skills development in our walled garden as well as understand plant identification across the wider College Estate.

Subjects you will learn include:

  • Preparing soil for sowing including vegetable production
  • Soil testing
  • Propagation of plants from seeds and cuttings
  • Planting and establishing plants
  • Identification of a range of common garden plants
  • Practical skills in gardening

Course progression:

On completion you can progress onto an RHS Level 2 in Practical Horticulture.

Additional information

To study this course you will be required to have:

PPE: Steel Toe Capped Boots or Wellington Boots, gardening gloves
