Overview
Performing Arts HNC (Full time)This exciting course has been carefully tailored to prepare you for work in the professional industry. You will explore a wide range of alternative approaches to acting, as well as the naturalistic and classical acting styles, develop as a well-rounded performer, building a portfolio of experience vital for auditions. At the end of this course, you will leave with professional headshots, a voice-over showreel, an actor’s showreel, an actor’s CV and knowledge of how to acquire an agent.
Throughout the course there are lots of opportunities to see live performances and to work with industry professionals on projects, gaining experience and employment connections.
Our lecturers have trained in a wide range of disciplines, including Performing Arts, Musical Theatre, Professional Acting, Drama and Psychology. They have worked as professional performers for stage and screen and also have experience in costume design, running arts companies and writing and directing plays.
Course information
- Applicants must have GCSE (or equivalent) English at grade C (grade 4) or above AND
- A BTEC National Diploma or other relevant Level 3 qualification, preferably in a relevant subject OR
- A minimum of one A-Level OR
- An Access to Higher Education Certificate OR
- Appropriate industry experience (please provide details on application)
As a guideline, a typical offer would require you to obtain a UCAS tariff score of between 32 – 48 points, based on your Level 3 studies. You will be invited to attend an audition that will include two audition speeches or one monologue and one song.
Please note that all students who wish to apply for this course who are non-native English speakers, or have not studied the final two years of school/college in English, must demonstrate capability in English to a standard commensurate to:
- IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections.
- PTE Academic score of 42 to 49.
You will develop your acting skills through various styles, working in our state-of-the-art TV studio and vocal recording studios and exploring practitioners such as Alexander, Feldenkrais, Linklater, Fitzmaurice, Uta Hagen, Grotowski, Katie Mitchell and Frantic Assembly.
Our modular structure allows you to tailor the course to suit your career aspirations by combining musical theatre, dance, singing and acting for camera units alongside the core programme.
Working as a company you will prepare for public performances, both in the classic theatre setting but also in site-specific locations, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Assessments vary from performances, presentations, essays, workshops and blogs. The course is 80% performance/practical and 20% theory.
On completion of the HND, you will be prepared for a number of different pathways including auditioning for professional work, further study through a top-up to a BA (Hons) degree, or further courses at drama school.
There will be a cost of approximately £400 to cover props, clothing, play scripts, books, printing costs and trips/visits.
For students studying on a full-time basis, you will be required to attend taught sessions at least three days a week, with a minimum of 15 hours of contact time with your lecturers. You will be self-motivated and will have an independent rehearsal schedule and study time built into your individualised weekly schedule.
