Shuttleworth College Fish Management Level 3
Fish Management

Jakes

Starting at Shuttleworth was a fresh start for me as I didn’t really enjoy school so after my GCSEs I wanted to do something that made me happy. I’d got the bug for fishing when I was younger and used to go regularly with my dad. I found it really exciting and, as I got older, it enabled me to focus on something outside of school.

I like the course because it’s very hands-on and it teaches us about a multi-million pound industry that has a lot of science behind it.

I really enjoy the aquaculture side where we look at the breeding and rearing of fish and selling them on for consumption or leisure making good use of the college’s fish farm facilities. This includes everything from small scale UK business to huge establishments and how things such as Brexit affects them.

We went on a trip to Holland in the first year to work with another college and also to look at artificial breeding and how to promote it. At the start of our second year we went to Malta, which is one of the best things I’ve ever done. We swam with tuna fish, which is a huge business in the Mediterranean, and studied the coastline environment.  We’ve also been to UK fish farms and will soon be going to the London Aquarium to support our studies.

My tutors are brilliant. I have a lot of respect for them but also a good relationship so we can bounce ideas off each other. I’m not sure whether I want to go to university or not although this course will allow this, but I would like a career in the industry in the future
