Entry requirements
Duration: 2 Years:
- 4 GCSEs grades 9–4 OR equivalent, ideally including English & maths
or
- Relevant Level 2 qualification
If you are not quite ready to study this Level 3 qualifications then the Countryside & Environment Level 2 course will cover the foundation knowledge and skills needed for you to progress.
What qualifications will I gain?
- On completion of the two years you will be awarded City and Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land and Wildlife Management (Fisheries) qualification.
- English and maths qualifications if required
- You can also gain up to 168 UCAS points for the Extended Diploma
How will I be assessed?
You will be continually assessed as the study programme progresses using a variety of methods, including presentations, case studies, assignments, practical assessments and externally set exams.
Course content
What will I study?
Year 1: During the first year of your study programme you will cover ten of the following units.
Mandatory units:
- Principles of Health and Safety
- Undertake and review work related experience in the land based industries
- Land based industry machinery operations
- Population surveys, ecology and conservation
- Countryside recreation
- Undertake estate skills.
Optional units:
- Fresh water captive environments
- River Fishery Creation and Management
- Cyprinid Farming
- Coarse, game and sea angling techniques.
Year 2: During the second year of your study programme you will cover nine of the following units.
Mandatory units:
- Principles of physical and biological environmental processes
- Water quality
- Fish Biology
- Fishery management
- Fresh water and Wetland Management
- Fish Health
- Warm water and marine aqua culture
- Undertake a specialist project in the land based sector.
Optional unit:
- Aquatics Welfare and Breed Development.
English and maths
If you don’t already have GCSE English and maths grade A*-C, we will work with you to help you develop your maths and English skills.
Work experience
You will be required to find a work placement in both year 1 and 2 of the study programme to achieve the industry experience unit.
Personal development skills, study skills and employability skills.
Additional vocational learning and qualifications
A number of trips will be organised in the UK and abroad, and you will also have the opportunity to enter angling competitions.
The College works closely with the local community and employers to give you the experience of the working environment.
You will also study to achieve the following additional qualifications:
- Survey techniques
- Pesticide application
- Angling coaching
Next steps
Upon completion of this study programme you could progress on to a university degree in a related subject, or find employment in the fisheries industry, as well as other land-based industries.
Additional information
The days you will be required in College will be Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
If commuting to Shuttleworth College will be difficult for you, then you can choose to live in our halls of residence on campus. Priority is given to those who live the furthest distance from the College so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.
During the course you will have the opportunity to achieve additional professional qualifications. Please be aware that there may be an additional awarding body cost for these qualifications. In order to partake in the course you will be required to wear clothing suitable for working outdoors, including steel-toe capped boots and protective overalls for all practical sessions.
There will be a range of study tours, some of which will be free, and payment plans are available for those that have a cost. (Advanced notice of trips is given). You will be required to purchase equipment such as waders, gloves, steel toe caps and overalls in order to take part in practical sessions.
