Digital Photography: An Introduction

This six-week course will give you an introduction to digital photography, giving you the opportunity to learn how to get the best out of the camera, as well as using basic image manipulation techniques. You can also use your own cameras on the course if you wish.

Course Information

Entry requirements

An interest in photography would be an advantage.

Course content

During the course you will study the following topics:

  • An introduction to digital photography
  • Using the camera
  • Different shooting modes
  • Composition and viewpoint
  • Using light
  • Downloading/capturing
  • The digital work space
  • Toolbar – basic image manipulation (e.g. cropping, adjusting levels).

The workshops will enable you develop your skills and knowledge of using digital-based photographic techniques. This is a studio-based course, with some location work taking place around the College grounds. There are a range of other courses that you can study alongside this course, such as black and white photography, or Photoshop.

Assessment methods

There is no formal assessment on this course.

Further study and career options

Depending on your experience and qualifications, you can choose to use this workshop to support your application to an art and design course, such as a National Diploma, Higher National Diploma or a degree. Alternatively, you may wish to study Photoshop alongside this course.

Additional information

This course is taught in a studio environment, and you will need to bring your own digital camera. You will also work on PCs for image manipulation.

Funding Information

Pay by instalments

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.
