Course Information

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • GCSEs A*-C/9-4 in English and maths/Functional Skills, AND
  • 32-48 UCAS tariff points including a Computing subject OR
  • IT Apprenticeship Level 3 OR
  • BTEC Level 3 qualification in Computing OR
  • An Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Computing or related subject.

We also welcome applications from mature students who will be considered on relevant work experience rather than qualifications.

Course content

The course will cover a broad-based overview of computing, which will allow you to develop wide-ranging skills and knowledge. You will gain academic, technical and professional training, leading to the skills necessary to design, implement, support, evaluate or manage IT systems in a vast range of industries, with the aim of gaining interesting and well paid employment, or continuing your education to BSc (Hons) level.

You will complete the HNC with one year of full-time study, and could then choose to continue to a HND with a further year of study. You will be expected to attend College for a minimum of 16 hours per week: two full days, or a combination of days and evening sessions. Our computing courses are delivered in small groups, by lecturers with a wide range of industry backgrounds. The teaching team have adopted a hands on approach to best familiarise you with industry practice.

  • Professional Practice
  • Database Design & Development
  • Security
  • Managing a Successful Computing Project
  • Computer Systems Architecture
  • Web Development

You will complete a Computing project as part of your programme of study. This project will be set by the Awarding Body, Pearson.

Assessment methods

Assessment is 100% assignment based. There will be no formal examinations on this programme. Teaching methods will include lectures, practical sessions, group work, tutorials and workshops. In addition, substantial learning resources and support materials are available online, facilitating home study.

Further study and career options

On successful completion of the HNC you can progress on to further study with our HND or choose to enter employment. The course opens up excellent career opportunities in IT, where you could gain employment in roles including computer programmer, IT specialist, IT support, database designer and more.

Additional information

Significant additional study will be required outside of College hours to be successful on this programme. Higher Education loans, grants and bursaries may be available to fund this course. You will need to spend £25 to attend trips that will complement your course.
