Basic Electrical Knowledge

This course is ideal if you are from a non-electrical background and have limited electrical knowledge, and want to learn more about the principles behind electrical installation and understand its terminology. The course is aimed at plumbers, gas engineers, kitchen fitters, general construction personnel and anyone involved in operating electrical equipment requiring a basic knowledge of how and why electrical systems.

Course content

This course is ideal if you are from a non-electrical background and have limited electrical knowledge, and want to learn more about the principles behind electrical installation and understand its terminology. The course is aimed at plumbers, gas engineers, kitchen fitters, general construction personnel and anyone involved in operating electrical equipment requiring a basic knowledge of how and why electrical systems.

Entry requirements

No prior knowledge is required, although an appreciation of basic maths will be a benefit.

Course content

During the course you will study the following topics:

  • Basic parameters and units of measurement
  • Types of electric current
  • Electrical power and energy
  • The basic electric circuits
  • Ohms law and volt drop
  • Electrical protection and calculation of protection device ratings
  • Voltage bands
  • The principles of earthing
  • Switching and isolation of electrical equipment.
Further study and career options

Successful completion of the course leads will to the award of a Bedford College Underpinning Knowledge Certificate. This will lead to Part P (Building Regulation) course and portable Appliance Testing course (PAT).

Additional information

Lunch will be provided. You will need: a calculator, pen, pencil, note taking materials.

Funding Information

Pay by instalments

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.
