Automotive Studies Advanced IMI Level 4 Certificate

This is a Level 4 vocational qualification which provides individuals with advanced levels of specialist technical knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to work as an advanced technician / engineer in the Light Vehicle automotive maintenance and repair sectors, alongside the development of wider transferable skills for use across the whole retail motor industry.

This qualification is for learners who have a keen interest in advanced automotive maintenance and are looking to progress into employment within this industry. It will provide them with the opportunity to develop their knowledge at the level suiting their ability at entry.
The qualification has been designed to be practical, engaging and motivating to support learners in gaining the advanced knowledge and skills required by light vehicle employers. Once they have achieved this qualification they can progress to higher education in automotive and engineering subjects, or to a job role in light vehicle as advanced technicians / engineers.

This qualification will increase the employability of our students as well as support the local industry by training their existing staff in dealerships and small garages

Course information

Entry requirements

Learners taking this qualification are likely to be 19 years of age or over and have previously completed an automotive Advanced Apprenticeship or full level 3 qualification in an appropriate subject specialism relating to this qualification.

There are no other formal entry requirements for this qualification, however learners would benefit from some prior knowledge or experience in diagnosing and rectifying vehicle system faults. GCSEs in Maths and English at grades A*-C are also recommended.

Selection for entry should take into account each applicant’s existing academic/ vocational qualifications, experience and interest in working in the sector.

Course content

You will learn:

  • Advanced Internal Combustion Engine Technology
  • Advanced Vehicle Body Electrics
  • Knowledge of Alternative Fuel Vehicles
  • Knowledge in Conducting Diagnostic Consultations with Customers in Automotive Environments
  • Advanced Light Vehicle Driveline and Chassis Technology
Qualification

You will gain:

  • IMI Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Studies
Assessment methods

Pass the IMI Written Support Materials, IMI Practical Support Materials and IMI set online tests.

Further study and career options

Once they have achieved this qualification they can progress to higher education in automotive and engineering subjects, or to a job role in light vehicle as advanced technicians / engineers.

Funding Information

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.
