What food is good for you? Why is blood red? How is disease transmitted? How do animals reproduce? What molecules are in your food? How does the environment work? If you are asking questions like this and have a keen interest in biology, this course could be just for you.
As a student on this course you will join our higher education community and be taught by highly experienced and professional lecturers. The course actively encourages independent, critical thinking and a mixture of group and individual work, allowing you to develop your understanding of key concepts, principles and practices in biology.
Our HNC focuses on equipping individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed in or advance your employment in biologically-based industries. Through the study of mandatory core and relevant specialist units learners will cover much of the underpinning knowledge, skills and understanding required for success progression into higher level study or entry into vocationally relevant employment.
- GCSEs A*-C/ 9-4 in English, maths and science. Functional skills at level 2 AND
- 32-48 UCAS tariff points including a science/ biology subject OR
- BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science or related discipline
- Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science OR
- Equivalent Level 3 qualification and industry experience
- T Level pass in an appropriate subject area
We welcome applications from mature students who will be considered on relevant work experience rather than qualifications.
Learners will study a variety of units across the biological sciences giving a broad understanding a varied in the programme, which will give you the opportunity to develop skills and experience to succeed in biology.
You will study units totalling 120 credits;
- Fundamentals of Laboratory techniques
- Scientific Data Handling and approaches
- Regulation and quality in applied science
- Cell biology
- Fundamentals of chemistry
- Anatomy and physiology
- Principles of ecology
- Fundamentals of biochemistry.
In addition to these mandatory core units, learners will study a variety of specialist units giving a broad technical knowledge and understanding of aspects of biology.
Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Applied Science.
Top up to a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Applied Science, or alternative courses at university, entry into vocationally relevant employment.
Our HNC is taught is small groups, by well qualified and industry linked lecturers, with a wide range of industry backgrounds. The teaching team have adopted a hands-on, flexible learning approach to best familiarise you with industry and academic practice.
Our close links to the science sector as a whole means that you will benefit from the knowledge and insight of industry experts, guest lecturers and industrial visits, with an international trip in the second year.
